Bryophyta is a free-to-play, level-128 moss giant boss tucked into her own lair in the Varrock Sewers. She drops Bryophyta’s essence (the ingredient for the F2P best-in-slot Bryophyta’s staff), opens up around 50k gp/hr in F2P, and is one of the easiest boss kills in the game once you know the trick to her growthlings. How to get to Bryophyta’s lair
Bryophyta’s lair sits at the eastern edge of the moss giant section in the Varrock Sewers. There are three ways in:
- Free-to-play / no Agility: Climb down the Varrock manhole, follow the sewer path past the red spiders, slash the web (knife or any slash weapon), and head to the iron gate.
- Level 51 Agility shortcut (P2P): Enter Edgeville Dungeon (next to Slayer master Vannaka) and take the agility shortcut directly to the moss giant area — faster and skips the red spiders.
- Giantsoul amulet (P2P): A charged Giantsoul amulet teleports you straight outside her lair entrance — the fastest method if you have one.
Since the 25 June 2025 rework, you only need a mossy key for your first visit — the gate stays unlocked permanently once you’ve used a key on it. After that you can re-enter the lair freely. Mossy keys are now only consumed when you open her chest after a kill.

F2P recommended requirements and setup
Recommended stats:
- 59+ Magic (for Fire Blast, the highest-DPS option in F2P)
- 37+ Prayer (for Protect from Magic)
- 40+ Defence (for green d’hide and rune armour)
- 50+ Hitpoints
Best F2P setup — Magic (highest DPS): Best-in-slot mage gear with a fire staff, autocasting Fire Blast. Bryophyta’s 50% fire weakness means magic outdamages range and melee by a wide margin in F2P. Use Protect from Magic and keep at distance — she won’t move toward you and can’t use her crush attack out of melee range.
Best F2P setup — Range: Maple shortbow + adamant arrows, green d’hide body and chaps, coif, amulet of power. Recommended stats are 60 Range, 40 Defence, 37 Prayer. Cheaper to gear, slightly lower DPS than magic.
Best F2P setup — Melee: Rune scimitar, rune full helm, rune kiteshield, green d’hide body for magic defence, amulet of strength. Slowest of the three because you eat her full magic combo while in melee distance.
Always bring: woodcutting axe or magic secateurs (for growthlings), food (lobsters or swordfish), a few prayer potions, and a knife if going via the manhole route.
P2P recommended requirements and setup
Members make this fight trivial — the bigger consideration is poison defence, since Bryophyta poisons in P2P up to 8 damage even through Protect from Magic.
- 60+ Attack / Strength / Defence (or equivalent ranged/magic levels)
- 43+ Prayer for Protect from Magic + offensive prayers
- An antipoison potion or antivenom+
Any setup that beats moss giants will obliterate Bryophyta. The fight is short enough that gear choice barely matters — bring whatever’s comfortable and don’t forget the axe.
The fight: mechanics and strategy
Bryophyta is aggressive on entry. Activate Protect from Magic before opening the gate. The fight has two phases that loop:
- Damage phase: Attack Bryophyta normally. She magic-blasts you every 3.6 seconds for up to 16 (mitigated by Protect from Magic).
- Growthling phase: Periodically, Bryophyta summons three growthlings and becomes immune to all damage except poison and venom while they’re alive. Switch targets and one-shot each growthling.
Killing growthlings (post-July-2025)
Equip a woodcutting axe (any tier — bronze through dragon all work) or magic secateurs in your weapon slot, then click each growthling once. They die in one hit. The blessed axe does NOT work because its attack type is registered as crush, not axe; battleaxes and the zombie axe also don’t qualify.
If you forgot to bring an axe, there’s a free bronze axe in the log pile inside the lair — grab it the second you walk in.
Combat Achievement tip: The Quick Cutter task asks you to kill all three growthlings within 3 seconds of the first one dying — trivial now that they one-shot.
Bryophyta’s chest and the rare loot
Since the 2025 rework, Bryophyta’s body drops a simple loot table similar to a moss giant (giant bones, occasional mossy key, a chance at common runes/herbs). The real loot lives in her chest, which appears in the lair after each kill and is opened with one mossy key per use. The chest holds the original Bryophyta drop table — including Bryophyta’s essence at 1/118 — plus the herb, seed, and gem tables.
Average loot value per kill: ~742 gp in members’ worlds, ~412 gp in F2P. The big ticket items are Bryophyta’s essence (~4.2M GE), ranarr seeds (~27k each), and snapdragon seeds (~55k each).

There is no Bryophyta pet — despite SERP demand for it, no pet drop exists on the wiki. Don’t grind for one.
Bryophyta’s essence and Bryophyta’s staff
Bryophyta’s essence is a 1/118 drop from the chest. It’s the only ingredient (besides a battlestaff) for Bryophyta’s staff, the highest Magic Attack and Magic Defence weapon available in F2P (+5 over any elemental staff or the magic staff).
Two ways to make the staff:
- 62 Crafting: Use the essence on a battlestaff (or vice versa). Free.
- F2P / no Crafting: Bring the essence to Zaff in central Varrock and pay 50,000 coins.
The staff requires 30 Magic and 30 Attack to wield. Charge it with up to 1,000 nature runes; while equipped and charged, it has a 1/15 chance to save a nature rune per cast. That’s the long-term moneymaker for High Alch grinders, especially paired with a tome of fire.

Money making and respawn
The OSRS Wiki money-making guide lists ~50,553 gp/hr in F2P for consistent Bryophyta kills, scaling higher in members’ worlds thanks to the herb and seed tables. The fight is short (~30 seconds with a decent setup), Bryophyta respawns in 9 seconds (15 ticks) after you attempt to open the chest, and the 25 June 2025 rework removed the per-kill key requirement — meaning your only bottleneck now is mossy keys for the chest.

Bottom line
Bryophyta is the best F2P boss to learn before stepping up to Vorkath, Zulrah, or any of the proper Slayer bosses. The fight has one real mechanic (kill the growthlings with an axe), the gear bar is low, and a single Bryophyta’s essence drop pays for thousands of GE bonds’ worth of gold.
